Runner Stories

Paula Smith

Why do I run?… Because… every time I lace up my running shoes I FEEL FREE. Free from incurable Burning Feet Syndrome (a.k.a. Erythromelalgia). Free from years of chronic pain that still dogs me. Every step I take fights back against the pain and increases the “runner’s high” that lifts my spirits and makes me smile. The wind in my face. The white-tailed doe and her twin fawns crossing the path. A Great Blue Heron flying gracefully, effortlessly, overhead. The sun shining on the lake, a million diamonds dancing on the water. Knowing how much better I’ll feel later. Knowing that once again, I’ve won the battle I face every day. Running gives me the strength to keep going, keep hoping, keep believing. Because, when I run, I am victorious.
