Women Powered by Withings
As we approach the 50th Boston 10K for Women, our sponsor Withings will recognize 10 amazing athletes that reflect the courage, determination, and passion of our running community. We hope this ongoing blog series will introduce some new and familiar faces, and inspire you on your 10K journey.
For Sayuri Lopez, running began with a life-changing moment.
After undergoing a lobectomy and losing half of her right lung, everything shifted. What once felt like “maybe someday” dreams suddenly became urgent, meaningful goals. The experience forced her to reflect—not on what she had done, but on everything she still wanted to do.
One of those dreams was to run a marathon.
Sayuri didn’t come from a running background. She didn’t see herself as an athlete. But that moment in her life gave her something powerful: perspective, and the courage to try.
In 2024, she signed up for her very first race—the Boston 10K for Women. With no prior race experience, she stepped onto the start line unsure of what to expect. The race was one of the hardest things she had ever done.
But she didn’t do it alone.
Surrounded by thousands of strong, supportive, and inspiring women, Sayuri found something bigger than the challenge itself. She found encouragement in every mile, energy in the crowd, and belief in herself she hadn’t felt before.
She crossed the finish line stronger—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.
Since then, running has become a symbol of what’s possible. Each year she returns to the Boston 10K for Women, it serves as a reminder of how far she’s come—and how much more life has to offer when you choose to fully live it.
Now in her third year running, Sayuri continues to chase her goals, including that dream of completing a marathon.
Because for her, running isn’t just about distance—it’s about resilience, gratitude, and embracing life, one step at a time.
